Smart phone users are spending their cash on great smart phone apps that are fun to use, exciting, and unique from the millions of other apps on the market today. The problem is that a mobile phone store may only present the first ten choices, leaving your potential customers wading through a sea of cool new apps. Although marketing your app typically costs money, there are some basic ways to effectively market your app for free.

Marketing an app using free methods, however, does require a lot of work. Start by building a teaser website. You can use free hosting until your app takes off. Post content regularly to create excitement for your potential app purchasers.

Set Up a Free Website

You may have a blog set up on your website, or you may host it through Blogger or WordPress, or both. Create interesting content to draw people in. Many app owners who are marketing apps use these blogger sites for backlinks and social media engagements.

Be sure to share your content to all of your social media channels. Twitter, Google+, Facebook, and Linkedin are the more popular ones. Pinterest and Tumblr are also popular choices. Share happy customer testimonials and photographs. Be sure to share photographs of your app’s functions. Graphics, illustrations, and cartoons also make people stop and take notice, more than any paragraph of text can.

Automate and Manage Social Engagement

Not everyone is online 24 hours a day. Marketing apps such as HootSuite or Buffer app can help you manage your social media postings. That way you can still have a life, but reach people who have varied work shifts. Just don’t repeat your posts too often, otherwise people may get bored and unfollow your group.

It’s free to create a YouTube channel so set one up for your mobile app business. Create a product video. You can make personal videos with your smart phone app capability. It’s not perfect, but it provides a personal way to connect with people who may be interested in purchasing your app.

Another great way to utilize YouTube is to create tutorial videos on how to use your app. Don’t create too many though, or people will think your app is too hard to use.

Reach Out for Coverage

Connect with bloggers who write about mobile apps is another great method of marketing your app. Offer to send them your app for free, for review on their site. Be sure to follow and share their blog as well. They’ll know that you’re genuinely interested in their blog when you stick around, rather than dashing off the minute your app has been reviewed.

Sign up for Mail Chimp or one of the other free email subscription collecting sites. Assemble your mailing list, then send out an exciting, but brief newsletter about the launch of your app.

Contests are also a great way to draw interest in. The prize could be something simple and easy to send out in the mail, such as a pen, sticker, or magnet, or a digital gift like a giftcard.

Basic marketing an app doesn’t have to be expensive. It can be a fun and rewarding experience when smart phone users purchase your app, pushing it ahead of the others in the app store.
